Ringette in Rockyford

It's safe to say that ringette in Rockyford started with Coach Dwayne.  Dwayne Marshman was a coach in the inaugural year of ringette back in 1991. He navigated his way through this new game, created a foundation for ringette to become a huge part of this community, and continued to coach for the next 20 years. He loved the game and connected to players, which led to great competition on the ice and everlasting friendships off the ice.

Dwayne lost a battle with cancer in 2011, but his legacy lives on in Rockyford. December 18th, 2010 will always be a day to remember.  On this special day, a community joined together to show our love and support for a man that shaped many young lives and had an unwavering commitment to the village of Rockyford. The "Ringers for a Reason" tournament was a great success that reflected Dwayne’s passion for ringette. It started off with a 12 hour ringette tournament and ended with a silent auction and steak dinner.  A total of 48 ringette players from the surrounding area hit the ice for a great cause.  We spent the day sharing fun and laughter playing the game we all love, exactly what we know Dwayne loved best.

That day, “Ringers for a Reason” raised $50,000, which was donated in Dwayne's name to the oncology unit (57) at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary where Dwayne received his cancer treatments. The money was used to purchase iPad for the unit, as Dwayne was passionate about patients being able to connect with their families.

Ringette is still going strong in Rockyford, even for some of the original 1991 players!  The Ringers Open C team hosted a memorial fundraising tournament in honor of Dwayne in December of 2018, which will hopefully become an annual event! Dwayne's wisdom and love for ringette will always be remembered in Rockyford.

We will play for him always.
